Apple just did the thing nobody thought it would actually do, and it did it with a twist nobody saw coming. At today’s “Surprise and Shine” event, Apple officially unveiled its first ever foldable iPhone, called the iPhone Duo, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. And buried inside the announcement was a genuinely wild detail, the selfie camera is hidden underneath the screen, completely invisible until you actually use it.
Here’s everything Apple just announced, broken down feature by feature.
The iPhone Duo Is Real, and It’s Not What We Expected

For years, the rumor mill called it the iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold. Apple went with something simpler: iPhone Duo. Here’s what it actually brings to the table.
- Book style folding design, opening like a passport rather than a clamshell
- 5.4 inch outer display for everyday use, unfolding into a 7.6 inch inner display for movies, gaming, and multitasking
- Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever when fully unfolded
- Powered by the new A20 Pro chip alongside Apple’s own C2 modem and N2 wireless chip
- 12GB of RAM, with 256GB of storage on the base configuration
- A 48MP plus 48MP dual rear camera system, with 18MP front and cover cameras
- Touch ID built into the frame instead of Face ID
- A titanium and aluminum build
The Feature Nobody Saw Coming: An Invisible Camera
Here’s the detail that’s about to blow up social media. Apple gave the iPhone Duo an in-display camera on the inner screen, hidden completely underneath the panel itself. There’s no visible cutout, no notch, no hole punch, nothing. The camera only becomes visible the moment you actually start using it, giving the inner display a genuinely edge to edge, uninterrupted look that no other foldable on the market currently offers.
It’s a feature Samsung actually experimented with early in its foldable lineup and eventually abandoned. Apple bringing it back, and reportedly making it work well, could end up being the single most talked about detail from today’s entire event.
Pricing and Release Date
- iPhone Duo: Starts at $1,999
- Pre-orders open October 16
- Official release date: October 23
That makes it Apple’s most expensive iPhone ever by a wide margin, positioning it firmly as a premium, early adopter device rather than a mainstream replacement for the standard lineup.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max
The Duo may be the headline, but Apple also confirmed the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, both leaning on internal upgrades rather than a redesign.
- A20 Pro chip with improved CPU, GPU, and neural engine performance for gaming and on-device AI
- Similar overall design to last year’s iPhone 17 Pro, with a more uniform finish across the aluminum and glass back
- iPhone 18 Pro: Starts at $1,199 for 256GB
- iPhone 18 Pro Max: Starts at $1,299 for 256GB
Notably, there is no standard iPhone 18 or iPhone Air 2 this year, Apple has reportedly pushed both to spring 2027, keeping this event focused entirely on the premium end of the lineup, plus the Duo.
Siri Gets a Real Overhaul: Meet Siri AI
Alongside the hardware, Apple introduced a revamped version of Siri called Siri AI, functioning much more like a personal AI chatbot than the Siri people are used to. After years of criticism over Siri lagging behind competitors, this marks Apple’s clearest step yet toward closing that gap.
Everything Else Announced Today
Apple didn’t stop at phones. The event also included:
- Apple Watch Series 12, running a new S11 chip with Apple Intelligence powered health features, priced the same as its predecessor
- Apple Watch Ultra 4, also on the S11 chip, aimed at the more rugged, adventure ready crowd
- AirPods 5, priced at $129 and $149, with up to 50% more noise reduction than AirPods 4, richer sound tuning for different ear sizes, and a wireless charging case on the higher tier model
Why Today’s Event Actually Matters
A few things line up here that rarely happen at once. This was John Ternus’s first keynote as CEO, having officially taken over from Tim Cook on September 1. It’s also Apple’s first real entry into a product category it’s watched Samsung and Google build out for years. And it’s launching not with a cautious first attempt, but with a feature, that invisible in-display camera, that genuinely outdoes what most competitors currently offer.
AT&T’s CEO summed up the skeptical take well, pointing out that foldables aren’t new territory for the industry as a whole, Android has had strong foldable options for years. But Apple entering the space at all, with this level of polish on day one, changes the conversation in a way a smaller player simply couldn’t.
The Bottom Line
The iPhone Duo is officially here, priced high, dated for October, and already the most talked about phone launch of the year. Paired with a genuinely upgraded iPhone 18 Pro lineup and a reworked Siri AI, today’s event gave Apple fans a lot to unpack, and gave its competitors a very clear signal that Apple isn’t just entering the foldable race, it’s trying to redefine it.
